Dodge Charger Third generation: 1971-1974
1971 Charger
"A Dodge Charger? A piece of sculpture?" This is a rhetorical question a driver's car and asked for a reunion in 1971 for the first Charger time.Designed more redundant around a bottle of Coca-Cola that second-generation Charger, third has a sweep in which the latter had a fold.
The front grille is now divided into two parts, with each half surrounded by chrome or body-color bumper and with a good pair of open or hidden round headlights depending on the level of completion. The whole area of the new cockpit, too, with a half-fastback rear window transitions in the deck lid spoiler is integrated with ducks. In each angle of this car is both flamboyant and handsome.
Although most of the chassis and structural components carried over from previous Chargers, the third generation of the car mounted on a 2-inch wheelbase was reduced to 115. There are currently six different models charger base ranging from plain old, while the Charger coupe body style and rigid, and then through an increase of 500 Charger rigid, more luxury-oriented Charger 500 SE rigid, high performance-oriented 500 Charger super Bee stiff and above, the Charger R / T stiff.
Charger base power plant is 145-hp 225 cubic inch six with 230 hp Bias-318 two-barrel optional; Charger 500 starts at 318 and has a range of V8 available, Super Bee began with 275 CV-383 V8 with 370-hp 440 "Magnum" four-barrel, 385 hp 440 "Six-Pack" (three two-barrel carbs) and 426 optional 425-hp Hemi V8, and R / T started with a 440 Magnum under the hood and is also offered with a Six-Pack and Hemi.
Car & driver measured his Charger SE 500 is equipped with a 440 Magnum and TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 95.7 mph. Not slow, but not too fast for a car with a big engine.
"One of the most enjoyable aspects of third generation Charger is a sense of cohesiveness," wrote Car and Driver. "The wheelbase has been reduced by 2 inches and 3 inches in total length, but in one of the above facts feeling curious juxtapositions, the dimension that has really grown, which makes the car feel smaller. This is a '71 Charger width of more than 2 inches wider its immediate predecessor, but you feel safer ....
A total 82681'71 Chargers made his way out in the United States, including 85 equipped with the 440 Hemi and 277 Six-Pack. It was a bestseller.
1972 Charger
Therefore, Charger brought to 1972 with little apparent change on the ground, and some significant omissions and revisions.
The line was reduced to just three models based on rigid, R / T, Super Bee, and all 500 decreases. Line now consists of a base Charger Coupe, SE stiff and rigid new rally. 225 Bias six, now promoted to the network only 110 hp, remains the basis of a standard car engine with a two-barrel 318 V8 now net-worth 150 hp.
Basic Rallye Magnum 440 four barrel now carry tourists net 280-hp engine. A 400 cubic inch V8 based on the old 383 is offered in the Charger SE and output 190 hp while breathing through a two-barrel carb. 426 Hemi was gone from the list of options, although the 440 Six-Pack remains a dispute about the amount (if any) progress.
Motor Trend measured un'72 Charger SE is powered by two 400 per barrel and agitated for beating TorqueFlite three-speed automatic to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 17.6 sadly seconds off altogether 76 mph. The muscle-car era ended. The sales decline is still healthy for un'72 Model 75 594 Chargers.
1973 Charger
The car continued in 1973 with a few cosmetic changes. There is a new grill for all Chargers use exposed bulbs, new windows quarter after treatment were divided into three segments of opera style and new taillights. 225 Bias six dribble output to 105 horsepower, while the range-topping 440 Magnum which stood at 280 hp. But for no apparent reason, beaten sales of 119 318 cars.
Engine: 318 V8. 400 V8 175HP clean. 400 V8 260hp net. 440 V8 280hp net. 440 Six Pack V8 330hp net
Performance: 440/280: 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, the quarter mile in the low 15s.
1974 Charger
1974 virtual repeat of 1973. Minor changes include all new color choices, patterns of soft wheat on the interior surface, and a slight increase in the size of the board rubber bumper (caused by the ever-changing federal regulations impact front and rear).
The biggest news is that the choice of a rally down and 360 4bbl replace 340 as the performance of the engine block small. All other engine options remain the same. Some performance ratio rear, including a 3.23 limited slip rear still available. Four transmission speed remains an option, but with the 440 engine.
The emphasis in recent years, proved to be a fancy place of execution, the high sales figures for the SE model, but you can still complete the respectable performance with Charger choice if one is so inclined and turn decent performance numbers for the day. chargers, however, no longer be regarded as a performance car, and gradually became a personal luxury car, because all the manufacturers "see the writing on the wall." Muscle car era ended, and 1975 Dodge Charger will be the final nail in the coffin.
